Amber Court Family of Care Emphasizes the Importance of Healthy Vision Among Senior Citizens

Healthy Vision Month Provides a Good Reason for The Amber Court Family of Care to Help Educate the Senior Community

(May, 2015) Westbury, NY- As we age, we experience noticeable changes in our body. These changes are inevitable but it is up to us whether they are healthy or not. Age-related changes in eye health are common for those approaching 60 and older, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA).

During Healthy Vision Month, held every May, empowering senior citizens with optical information is vital. With constant research and technological innovations, our society is able to improve our health in more ways than ever. Making eye health a priority can help clear up any foggy images that people may have on what it means to live a healthy life.

Here are some things you can do as advised by the National Eye Institute (NEI):

1. Get a dilated eye exam

2. Live a healthy lifestyle

3. Know your family history

4. Use protective eye wear and wear sunglasses

Getting regular eye exams is the only way to catch any possible eye diseases early because with many diseases out there, there are no warning signs. Eating healthy and exercising regularly helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Amber Court Family of Care is using May to educate senior citizens on how to keep up their health into what should be their "golden years".

In regards to keeping your eyes healthy, maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial. Being overweight or obese can increase your chance of receiving diabetes or other problematic health conditions, which can lead to vision loss or glaucoma in the diabetes case.

The sun is one of the strongest forces out there. By wearing sunglasses, you are protecting your eyes from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Some of the sun’s effects on the eye may include: cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision as well as pterygium, a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eye causing astigmatism.

United Nations World Health Day

We all see those letters written by the restaurants. Graded A, B, C and so forth in the food industry. Cleanliness is key but what else is in our food that needs to be graded as well?

Every year, on April 7th, the World Health Organization (WHO) promotes the importance global health. There are different campaigns every year representing the different nations of the world. This year’s theme is “Food Safety”.

How much do you really know about your food?

Changes in food production, distribution, and consumption as well as changes to the environment and so forth all pose challenges to the national food safety systems. Food contains different types of harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemical substances and are responsible for the different types of diseases that range from diarrhea to cancer. Unsafe food consumption is linked to over 2 million deaths, mostly in children.

WHO is helping countries prevent, detect, and respond to forborne disease outbreaks. Here are some easy steps to keep your food tasting delicious and germ free:

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY

Although Saint Patrick’s Day is a great time to dress in green and drink and be merry... here’s a little history lesson as to why Saint Patrick’s Day is such a huge international holiday.

Interestingly, Saint Patrick was not born in Ireland. He was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He eventually escaped and found his way to Britain and then France to study to become a bishop. After years of training he felt the need to return back to Ireland where he converted the Pagans to Christianity.

There are many legends about Saint Patrick. According to one legend, it is said that the three-leafed shamrock is used to explain the concept of Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He used the power of Trinity to put the curse of God onto snakes, driving them into the sea to drown.

The holiday is celebrated on the day of Saint Patrick’s death, every March 17th.  It initially celebrated the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day is also used to celebrate the Irish heritage and culture as a whole. In 1995, the Irish government allowed drinking that day to increase tourism and to display Irish culture. From a religious perspective, drinking is allowed this day because of the Holiday Lent, which prevents Christians from drinking starting Ash Wednesday for six weeks until Easter Sunday.

The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade was held in the United States, in New York City, in 1762 by Irish soldiers serving in the English military. They marched through New York City to signify their unity and strength. The Saint Patrick’s Day parade is seen as an international celebration allowing the Irish people to continue to express their ethnic identity.
