Amber Court Family of Care Emphasizes the Importance of Healthy Vision Among Senior Citizens

Healthy Vision Month Provides a Good Reason for The Amber Court Family of Care to Help Educate the Senior Community

(May, 2015) Westbury, NY- As we age, we experience noticeable changes in our body. These changes are inevitable but it is up to us whether they are healthy or not. Age-related changes in eye health are common for those approaching 60 and older, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA).

During Healthy Vision Month, held every May, empowering senior citizens with optical information is vital. With constant research and technological innovations, our society is able to improve our health in more ways than ever. Making eye health a priority can help clear up any foggy images that people may have on what it means to live a healthy life.

Here are some things you can do as advised by the National Eye Institute (NEI):

1. Get a dilated eye exam

2. Live a healthy lifestyle

3. Know your family history

4. Use protective eye wear and wear sunglasses

Getting regular eye exams is the only way to catch any possible eye diseases early because with many diseases out there, there are no warning signs. Eating healthy and exercising regularly helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Amber Court Family of Care is using May to educate senior citizens on how to keep up their health into what should be their "golden years".

In regards to keeping your eyes healthy, maintaining a healthy weight is beneficial. Being overweight or obese can increase your chance of receiving diabetes or other problematic health conditions, which can lead to vision loss or glaucoma in the diabetes case.

The sun is one of the strongest forces out there. By wearing sunglasses, you are protecting your eyes from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Some of the sun’s effects on the eye may include: cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can blur vision as well as pterygium, a tissue growth over the white part of the surface of the eye that can alter the curve of the eye causing astigmatism.
