Isolation is dangerous and can deteriorate independence for anyone and elders are no exception. Assisted living allows the senior to have the best of both worlds, independence with the knowledge that someone else is there to take care of them if needed. Maybe you live in another state or maybe you just can’t visit your parent as often as you’d like that you’re left uncomfortable leaving your parents at home. Whatever the reason may be; any possible decision leading to move your parent to a care taking facility is a great one.
The purpose of an assisted living is to create a healthy environment and prevent social isolation. At the same time it allows the senior and you to feel at ease knowing that someone is there to take care of them.
Usually you would check out the facility first before bringing your parents to see for themselves whether they like it or not. Why wouldn't
you? You want the best for your parents. With assisted living the physical environment is more appealing because it has the feeling of home. Assisted living simply provides a place where elders are supervised in addition to some personal care such as meals, social activity and help with daily living activities such as bathing and dressing. Setting up reminders for medication assistance is also available. If the level of care needs to be increased the health care provider will be contacted and customarily work something out.
Meals are given three times a day and there’s always help with light housekeeping and laundry. Depending on the community, assisted living can have a fitness center, pool, beauty salon, and transportation to wherever the senior may want to go. The days can also be spent doing other planned events and activities.
Several people are pet lovers. They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. Assisted living usually allows the senior to bring their pet with them to their place of residence only if they can take care of it.
Many people confuse assisted living with nursing homes. Assisted living is not a nursing home facility. Assisted living is not usually licensed to give nursing care they way nursing home are. Nursing homes are like hospitals with skilled care professionals taking care of frail elderly beings. Nursing homes provide complex medical services licensed by Medicare or Medicaid while assisted living is not.
Assisted living accommodations are regulated by the Department of Social Services not the Department of Health the way nursing homes are. However, specialized waivers may be given to take care of residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Assisted living is regulated at the state level for more information click on the link: http://aspe.hhs.gov/daltcp/reports/stasvyes.htm#NY
